If you're setting up a self-serve checkout, there's a distinction in Stripe's rules that catches a lot of operators by surprise — and it's worth understanding before you buy a card reader, not after.
Stripe's card readers and Tap to Pay support attended and semi-attended setups. They do not support unattended ones.
That sounds like it rules out the whole idea of a self-serve stand. It doesn't. But the words don't mean quite what most people assume, and the difference between "semi-attended" and "unattended" is narrower — and easier to land on the right side of — than it first appears.
The three definitions, in Stripe's own words
These are quoted directly from Stripe's support documentation, current as of 2 August 2026:
Attended — "staff support is available, either per device or per location."
Semi-attended — "a customer independently interacts with the card reader, but staff may be available in the store or nearby if needed."
Unattended — "no staff is on location to help the customer if needed."
Stripe's own examples of unattended terminals are ATMs, vending machines, dispensing machines, toll booths and parking meters. Their stated position is that Terminal's "pre-certified card readers and Tap to Pay support attended and semi-attended retail environments but don't support unattended."

The one question that decides it
Forget the terminology for a second. Stripe's line comes down to a single question:
Is there a person on the property who could help a customer if something went wrong?
Not standing at the kiosk. Not watching it. Just there, and reachable.
Stripe's own example of an acceptable semi-attended setup is "a self-service kiosk with roaming employees nearby at the location, but not one per kiosk." Nobody is assigned to the kiosk. Somebody is simply around.
That's a much lower bar than "staffed", and it's why a lot of setups people describe as "unattended" actually aren't.
Where common setups actually land

Notice that several of these change category depending on the time of day. That's normal, and it's the thing most operators miss. A campground store can be semi-attended at 2pm and unattended at 11pm. If you accept card payments through a reader in both windows, only one of them is inside Stripe's supported use.
Real-world advice on proximity
"Nearby" isn't defined in metres, and Stripe hasn't published a distance. What matters in practice is whether a customer who runs into trouble can actually get help within a reasonable time — before they give up and walk away.
Some practical guidance from how these setups actually behave:
Line of sight beats distance. A stand you can see from the kitchen window is functionally closer than one that's physically nearer but around a barn. If you'd notice a customer standing there looking confused, you're nearby.
Assume the customer won't hunt for you. If getting help requires walking up an unmarked driveway and knocking on a stranger's door, most people won't. They'll leave. Presence only counts if it's discoverable.
Signage is doing more work than you think. A sign that says "Need help? Ring the bell — we're right inside" converts theoretical presence into practical availability. Without it, a customer has no way to know anyone is there at all.
Be honest about your quiet hours. The stand that's semi-attended all afternoon is unattended at 6am. If a meaningful share of your sales happen when nobody's home, plan for that window specifically rather than assuming your daytime setup covers it.
Distance matters less than response time. Forty yards with a call button beats twenty yards with no way to summon anyone.
Making "nearby" real: call buttons and doorbell cameras
If you're on the property but not visible from the stand, a way for customers to reach you is the single cheapest upgrade you can make. It also does double duty as a deterrent and a record.
Two families of device are worth considering, and they solve slightly different problems.
Video doorbells give you two-way audio plus a recording. Good if you also want footage of the stand. The catch: they depend on Wi-Fi reaching the stand, and roadside locations often can't manage that. Battery models also drain faster in high-traffic spots — Ring documents this explicitly for commercial locations.

Wireless call buttons and callboxes are the purpose-built option, and for a rural stand they're often the better choice. A weatherproof button at the stand rings a chime or handheld radio wherever you are, with range measured in hundreds of metres to over half a mile. No Wi-Fi, no cloud account, no app.

If your stand has reliable Wi-Fi and you want video, go with a doorbell camera. If it doesn't — and most roadside stands don't — a long-range call button is more dependable and usually cheaper.

How many people for how many devices?
If you're running several checkout points and want a sense of what "staff available" looks like at scale, the wider self-checkout industry has settled on some rough numbers:
Most retailers run one attendant to four–six stations. Loss-prevention specialists tend to recommend one to four. Some jurisdictions have begun legislating it: Santa Ana's ordinance sets one employee per three self-checkout kiosks, and a 2025 Rhode Island bill required one staffed lane for every two self-checkout stations.
For a small operator with one or two tills, none of this is binding — but it's a useful sanity check. If one person is genuinely covering more than about six self-serve points, "available if needed" starts to become a stretch in practice, whatever the paperwork says.
To put actual numbers against your own situation, the pricing page has two calculators worth running: "What a checkout lane costs per month", which takes your lane count, how many staff are watching them, hours and wage; and "Will an unattended lane pay off for your spot?", which compares your current checkout method against a self-serve one.
If nobody is on site at all
Genuinely nobody there, at least some of the time? That's a real situation and it doesn't mean you can't take card payments — it means the card reader isn't the right tool for those hours.
Payments the customer completes on their own phone are a different product entirely. They're ordinary online payments, and online payments have no attended-or-unattended concept — anyone can pay online from anywhere. The attended/semi-attended rule applies to physical card readers and Tap to Pay, not to a customer paying from their own device.
So a practical pattern for a stand that's sometimes staffed and sometimes not:
- When someone's around — tap to pay on the tablet, or a card reader.
- When nobody is — let the customer pay from their own phone.
Which payment methods your till offers is a setting, so check what your devices currently have switched on and make sure it matches how the location actually runs. One thing to be aware of: online card rates are typically higher than in-person rates, and the fixed per-transaction fee is larger, which bites hardest on small baskets. Exactly how to configure a device for true unattended mode
Today this is a manual configuration. It takes about a minute in the TallyTill web portal.
- Sign in to the portal and open Credit Card Processing (
/portal/payment-config). - Find Enable Card Readers — the master switch for in-person card payments through Stripe Terminal — and turn it off. With it off, the till stops offering card payment through a reader and the server refuses card-present payment attempts. This is the setting that keeps you inside Stripe's rules.
- Find Offline Payments and turn it off as well. Offline "store and forward" only works through a Bluetooth reader, which is card-present, so it carries exactly the same restriction. This one is easy to miss because it sits in its own section.
- Scroll to Pay by QR (online — no reader) and make sure it is on. This is what keeps you taking credit cards: the till shows a QR code, the customer scans it, and pays by card or Cash App Pay on their own phone. It needs your Stripe account connected — if the toggle is greyed out, connect Stripe first.
- If you take cash or checks, leave those on. They are unaffected — cash and check work unattended without restriction.
One limitation to know about right now. The card-reader master switch is an account-level setting, so it applies to every device on your account. If you run a staffed café till and an unattended farm stand from the same account, you cannot yet configure them differently. Until per-device control ships, keep unattended locations on their own account.
On the roadmap. Per-device attendance settings and scheduled unattended hours are planned — so a till can run attended through the day and switch itself to QR-only automatically when you close up, with nobody touching a setting. That work is tracked and active.
The short version
- Stripe supports attended and semi-attended card-reader payments. Not unattended.
- The test is whether a person is on the property — not whether they're watching the device.
- Most farm stands, pro shops, waiting rooms and lobby shelves are semi-attended already, especially during business hours.
- Signage and a call button turn theoretical presence into real availability, and they're inexpensive.
- Time of day changes your category. Plan your quiet hours deliberately.
- Configuring unattended mode today means turning Enable Card Readers and Offline Payments off while leaving Pay by QR on — scheduled unattended hours are on the roadmap, not available yet.
- If nobody's there, let the customer pay on their own phone instead of through a reader.
If you're unsure where your specific setup lands, ask Stripe directly and describe it concretely — your location, whether anyone is on the property, and how a customer would get help. A specific description gets a far more useful answer than a general question, and it gives you something in writing.
