You've decided to put a tablet in the stand and let it take payments while you're in the field. Good instinct — it's the cheapest self-checkout there is. But now a quieter worry sets in: it's going to sit out there through a 38°F morning, a 95°F afternoon, a rain squall, and a wifi signal that fades to nothing past the barn. Will it survive? And if it hiccups, do I lose the sale?
Every page that ranks for this question is a company selling you a $300 weatherproof enclosure. Some stands genuinely need one. Most don't. Here's the honest version — what actually breaks, what costs nothing to fix, and the one part the enclosure vendors never mention: what happens to your checkout when the device does stumble.
The one spec that decides most of this
A consumer tablet is a fair-weather machine, and the manufacturer will tell you exactly how fair. Apple publishes a hard number for the iPad, and mainstream Android tablets sit in roughly the same band: it's built to run in ambient temperatures from 32°F to 95°F, and to be stored (powered off) from -4°F to 113°F (Apple Support).
Those four numbers are the whole ballgame. Inside the operating band, you're fine. Push past 95°F and the device throttles itself and may flash a temperature warning and refuse to work until it cools. Drop below freezing and the battery's chemistry stalls — the screen dims, charging pauses, and it can shut off, though it usually recovers once it warms back up. Stray outside the storage band and you risk permanent damage.
Notice the gap between the two bands. The device tolerates far more when it's off than when it's on. That single fact drives most of the practical advice below: the danger isn't the weather your stand sees — it's the weather your stand sees while the screen is lit and the sun is on it.
Cold mornings
Cold rarely kills a tablet; it just makes it sulk. Below freezing the lithium battery loses capacity fast, the screen dims to save power, and a device that sat out overnight may boot slowly or not at all until it warms up. The damage risk is real only if it's charging hard in deep cold or if you're well below -4°F.
What costs nothing: bring it in overnight when frost is coming, and let it reach room temperature before you wake the screen — don't power on a tablet that's still ice-cold. If it lives outside, keep it plugged in (a trickle of power and its own waste heat keep it above the cliff) and out of direct wind. A closed stand or a simple insulated box buys you several degrees.
Hot afternoons
Heat is the one that actually shortens a tablet's life, and direct sun is the culprit far more than air temperature. A tablet in 80°F shade is comfortable; the same tablet in 95°F full sun is a dark slab absorbing radiant heat, and its own screen and charging add to it. That's when you see the throttle and the overheat warning — and repeated cooking is what permanently saps the battery.
What costs nothing: get it out of direct sun. Mounting it under the stand's roof overhang, angled away from the low afternoon sun, solves 90% of heat problems for free. Turn the screen brightness down and the auto-lock timeout short so it isn't blazing at full power all day. If your only mounting spot bakes in the sun, that's when a vented or actively cooled enclosure earns its price.
Sun glare — the problem you'll actually notice first
Long before heat damages anything, glare makes the screen unreadable, and a customer who can't read the checkout doesn't finish it. A typical tablet runs 400–500 nits of brightness; midday sun is brutally brighter. No software fixes this.
What costs nothing: orientation. Face the screen north, or into the shade of the roof, so the sun is never behind the customer's shoulder bouncing off the glass. A matte anti-glare screen protector is a few dollars and helps. If the stand is fully open to the sky, a small awning over the mount does more than any setting.
Rain, dust, and curious hands
Water and a bare tablet don't mix, and a roadside stand collects dust, pollen, and the occasional wasp. This is the legitimate case for an enclosure — a sealed, IP-rated tablet housing keeps weather out, and the outdoor-kiosk versions add the heating and cooling that push the usable range out to roughly -22°F to 113°F. If your stand is genuinely open-air and unattended in all weather, budget for one.
But most farm stands already have a roof and three walls. If yours does, a tablet mounted under cover, back from the drip line, needs a case far less than a bracket that holds it firmly and a lock so it doesn't walk off. Which brings up the other exposure: the device itself. Lock the tablet to your checkout screen (kiosk mode / screen pinning) so a bored kid can't swipe out of it, close it, or open anything else — and physically secure the mount.
Power: a tablet that's "on all day" is really "plugged in all day"
A tablet left displaying a checkout screen from dawn to dusk will not last on battery, and running a battery flat-to-full every day in the heat is exactly the abuse that wears it out fastest. Treat power as a requirement, not an afterthought. If you have an outlet at the stand, run a proper outdoor-rated cable to it and leave the tablet plugged in. If you don't, a solar panel and a battery pack sized for a tablet is a well-trodden setup — a tablet sips far less power than a fridge or a lit sign.
The part the enclosure vendors skip: what happens to the sale
Here's the worry underneath the temperature charts. Say the tablet does throttle in the heat, or reboots, or the wifi drops while a customer is standing there. On a cloud-only register, that's a lost sale and a frozen screen. It doesn't have to be — and this is where the software matters as much as the hardware.

Step back and the risk math changes. If you buy a $1,200 dedicated kiosk and it cooks in July, that hurts. - Mount it under cover, facing away from the sun. Solves heat and glare at the same time, for free.
- Keep it plugged in. Outdoor-rated cable to an outlet, or a solar-plus-battery pack.
- Turn brightness and auto-lock down. Less heat, longer life, still readable in shade.
- Bring it in on frost nights, or box and power it if it stays out.
- Lock it to the checkout screen and bolt down the mount — weather isn't the only thing that wanders into a roadside stand.
- Add a sealed enclosure only if the stand is truly open to the sky. Most aren't.
- Pick a checkout that records offline, so a reboot or a dead signal bar never erases a sale.
