A pumpkin patch runs on a stopwatch. Most farm attractions pack the bulk of their year into a fall window measured in weeks rather than months — which means every Saturday counts, and the gate is where the day is won or lost. A slow line at the entrance doesn't just annoy families; it caps how many cars you can turn over before dark.

Two things clog that gate more than anything else: taking payment and proving who paid. This guide walks through how to solve both with a tablet and a small thermal printer, instead of a rented ticketing kiosk you pay for all year to use for a few weeks.

The two real bottlenecks at the gate

Payment. A single cash box means someone's making change while the line grows, and a chunk of visitors show up with no cash at all. One card reader tied to a laptop is barely better — it's one lane, and if the farm's connection hiccups out in the field, it stops taking cards entirely.

Re-entry and "did they pay?" Once someone's admitted, they wander — to the corn maze, the hayride, back to the car for a jacket. Staff at each activity need a fast way to see a guest is legitimately in, without radioing the front gate.

The fix for both is the same idea: sell the ticket and hand the guest a proof-of-entry in one motion, then let any staffed till check that proof anywhere on the property.

What a modern farm gate actually looks like

Set this up before opening weekend — in this order

None of this is on by default, and the order matters. Miss a step and the gate prints nothing on your busiest morning.

  1. Turn on printer templates. This is the master gate. Until it's on, nothing prints from a template no matter what else you've configured.
  2. Assign a template to the device that will be printing. A device with no template assigned prints nothing.
  3. Link each ticket product to a template. This is the step people skip. Auto-printing happens per line item, driven by the product's linked template — which is why a cart of four admissions and three jars of jam prints four bands and no jam bands. A ticket product with no linked template sells fine and prints nothing.
  4. Turn on wristband scanning on every device you want checking bands at the gate or out in the field. It's per-device and off by default, so the till in the corn maze needs it too.
  5. Turn on signed wristband codes. By default the printed QR is a plain link to that sale's record. Scanned without a connection, all a till can verify is the validity dates printed on the band. Switch signing on and the code carries a cryptographic signature the till checks on the device, so an offline scan confirms the band was issued by one of your tills rather than just falling inside a date range.

What none of this does is stop copying. A wristband QR is reusable inside its validity window — a photographed day-pass code will scan clean every time until it expires, signed or not. Treat a band as proof that someone paid for that entry, the same way a paper stub is, and keep the visual check: staff look at the band on the wrist. If you need genuinely single-use admission, this isn't it yet.

That's the honest scope. It's still better than a stub anyone can hand off with no record behind it, and it checks out in a dead zone, which is what a lot of farms are actually stuck on.

What "offline" does and doesn't cover

Worth being precise, because "works offline" gets used loosely in this industry and the details decide your Saturday.

Checking a band works offline. The code is read on the device with no round trip to a server. Scanning at the hayride in a dead zone works. With signing on, that check verifies the signature; with signing off, it verifies the printed date window only.

Selling is a different question. Cash and checks always work, and barcode scanning is local. Cards are where it gets conditional:

  • Stripe's offline mode queues card sales and forwards them on reconnect — but it needs an external Bluetooth or USB reader (tap-to-pay has no offline mode at all), has to be enabled for your account ahead of time, requires that reader to have connected online at that location beforehand, is capped by default at roughly $50 per sale and $500 held unforwarded, and leaves you carrying the loss if a card later declines. For a gate selling a family's admission across a full Saturday, those caps bind quickly — it's an outage bridge, not a plan.
  • QR-to-phone is not an offline route. The guest pays on their own phone, but your till has to reach the server to create the checkout and confirm it. QR solves the problem of nobody being there; it doesn't solve no signal.

The practical upshot: if your gate has service, everything works. If it doesn't, plan on cash as the primary tender and treat cards as a bonus — while knowing your bands will still check out everywhere on the property. Where the savings actually are

We're not going to put a percentage on this. Nobody has run a controlled comparison of a farm gate with and without QR checking, and any figure claiming otherwise is somebody's marketing. What we can tell you is where the money actually moves.

You're not renting a seasonal system. What makes gate ticketing expensive for a farm is paying for it all year to use it for a few weeks. Running the gate on the same checkout you use in the farm store means there's no separate seasonal line item.

A lane costs a tablet and a printer, not a terminal. Adding a second selling lane on a busy Saturday means a second device and a second printer — still far below the cost of dedicated ticketing hardware. Validation-only stations need no printer at all.

Fewer walk-offs. The visitor who arrives with no cash is a sale lost entirely — and at a gate that's a whole family's admission, not a small basket.

A record behind every ticket. A paper stub proves nothing after the fact. A band ties back to a sale you can look up.

One thing it does not do is reduce card chargebacks. A chargeback is a cardholder disputing a charge with their bank; whether the wristband was genuine isn't what's at issue. Anyone telling you signed tickets cut chargebacks is selling you something.

Selling more than admission

The farm store is where the average ticket grows — mums, jams, gourds, cider, kettle corn. Most of it has no barcode, and you don't need to label every jar:

  • Barcoded items scan locally on the device and work with no signal.
  • Everything else — a painted gourd, a jar of local honey — a staffer or the customer snaps a photo and the AI offers the closest matches from your catalog to add. That one needs a connection, since identification runs on a server. Nothing is passively watched or auto-rung; every item is added on purpose, by a scan or a tap.

So the same device that admits guests in the morning rings up the checkout line at the barn all afternoon.

A practical setup checklist

  • One device per selling lane, each with its own thermal printer if that lane issues bands. Validation-only stations need scanning switched on but no printer.
  • Work through the five setup steps above, in order. Do this first; everything else assumes it.
  • Pre-build your ticket types as products with clear names your gate staff can find fast — and link each one to a printer template, or they won't print.
  • Decide your proof-of-entry format. Wristbands are visible and hard to remove by accident, which suits general admission. Stickers suit anything tied to a container rather than a person, like a u-pick cup or a flower bucket.
  • Check your signal at the gate, not at the house, and decide your payment mix from what you find.
  • Do a full dress rehearsal before opening weekend: ring a ticket, print the band, and scan it on a second device with the connection switched off. That single test exercises every step above and is the only way to know the chain is wired correctly.
  • Train the gate: one scan, plus a look at the band on the wrist. That's the whole workflow.
