From Zero to First Sale: Your TallyTill Setup Checklist

From Zero to First Sale: Your TallyTill Setup Checklist

You've decided to add self-serve checkout to your farm stand, honor box, or micro-market. You have an account. Now what?

The TallyTill portal walks you through five clear steps—business details, plan, Stripe, device, catalog—in the exact order you need them. Most operators finish in under an hour. The one step worth slowing down for is Stripe. Gather your documents first, and the connection usually takes just minutes.

We've made a walkthrough video that covers every step:

TallyTill Account Setup

Here's what you'll do and what you need to have on hand.

Step 1: Enter Your Business Details and Set Sales Tax

TallyTill prints your business name, phone, and email on every receipt. Enter them now.

Choose your state. TallyTill will set your sales tax rate automatically—no math required. If you operate in multiple states or have a tax exemption, you can adjust this after setup.

Step 2: Pick Your Plan

TallyTill plans differ in shape, not features. Each includes the full checkout experience, barcode and photo recognition, payment processing, device management, and our built-in assistant Tally.

The difference is throughput and device count. Review the current plans and pricing to see what fits your event size or store traffic. You can change anytime.

Step 3: Connect Stripe (Gather These Documents First)

This is the step worth pausing for. Most first-time operators create a Stripe account as part of TallyTill setup rather than connecting one they already have. Either way, verification is faster if you have everything ready before you open the form.

Have These Three Things About Your Business:

  • Legal name and structure (sole proprietor, LLC, corporation, etc.)
  • Real street address (not a PO box—Stripe requires it)
  • Employer Identification Number (EIN). A sole proprietor can use their Social Security Number instead.

Have These Two Things About You:

  • Legal name, date of birth, and home address
  • Last four digits of your Social Security Number (a federal requirement for moving money, not a TallyTill requirement)

Have Your Business Bank Details:

  • Routing number and account number for a business checking account in your legal name

When you're ready, open the Stripe form in the TallyTill portal. Verification usually completes in minutes. If Stripe needs to review documents, budget a day or two. Once verified, your first payout arrives 7–14 days after your first sale, then every 2 business days after that.

Stuck? Ask Tally, the assistant built into the portal. Tap the question mark icon anytime.

TallyTill runs on what you already own: an Android tablet, a smartphone, or any web browser. No special hardware needed.

When you register a device in the portal, you'll get a QR code. On the device itself, open the TallyTill app or web checkout, tap the setup icon, and scan the code. Nothing to type. The device links instantly and is ready to take payments.

Step 5: Import Your Catalog and Ring a Test Sale

You can add products one at a time or import them from a CSV file (spreadsheet). Many operators find it faster to build a file in Excel, then upload it. Either way, every product needs a barcode, a name, and a price.

Once products are in, take the till yourself. Scan a barcode (or tap to snap a photo of an item without one), add it to the cart, and complete a test payment. TallyTill accepts cards through Stripe, QR payments, and cash or check if you choose to turn them on.

After your test sale posts, you're live. The next real transaction is your first sale.

How Checkout Works in Practice

Every transaction starts with the customer choosing what to buy. They scan an item's barcode with the camera, or tap the photo button and snap a picture—TallyTill's AI identifies the product. The item goes in the cart. No passive watching, no automatic rings. Customers decide what to add.

Once they're done shopping, they see the total, pick a payment method, and complete the sale. Card and digital payments are processed by Stripe; TallyTill never handles card numbers directly. Cash and check, if you've enabled them, are logged and settled manually or via deposit.

Each transaction is tracked in your portal—sales by time, by product, by payment method.

Your Next Step

Set up takes one hour if everything is ready, a little longer if Stripe moves to document review. The hardest part is gathering your Stripe paperwork before you start the form.

If you have questions as you go, Tally is there. And if you hit something unexpected, TallyTill support is ready to help.
