Peak Saturday at a u-pick is the day the whole season is built around, and it is also the day the single till becomes the bottleneck. Guests queue to get in. Then the same guests queue again to pay for what they picked. The person running the register spends the best four hours of the year with their back to the field.
The fix is not a faster cashier. It is letting guests do both ends themselves — entry at the gate, checkout in the shop — while staff do the work only a person can do.
What the guest actually does
Entry passes are just products
There is no separate ticketing system to buy, learn, or reconcile at the end of the day. A day pass — adult, child, senior, a weekday rate, whatever your gate structure is — is a general-admission ticket sold as a catalog product. It appears in the same catalog as your jam and your flower cups, it rings up through the same till, and it lands in the same sales reporting.
That matters most at closing time. Gate revenue and shop revenue are not two spreadsheets that have to be married up. They are one day's sales, already itemised.
When a pass sells, the till's thermal receipt printer prints it as a wristband carrying a signed QR code. There is no wristband stock to order in a particular colour for a particular weekend, and no roll of pre-printed tickets to count in and out of a cash box.
The gate keeps working when the signal does not
Farm gates are frequently the worst-connected spot on the property — a field edge, a tree line, a metal barn. Wristband validation is designed for that: the QR is cryptographically signed, so any till can verify it is genuine and unaltered without calling home first. A guest scanning in during a dead spot gets through.
Entry pass sales and wristband validation are a settings-enabled feature. They are available when your operation needs them and stay out of the way when it does not — a farm stand with no gate never sees the option.
Checkout without a cashier
Inside the shop, the guest drives the transaction. Two ways in:
- Scan the barcode. Packaged goods — jam, honey, cold drinks, a bag of coffee — go through the way they would anywhere.
- Tap to photograph. Loose and unpackaged goods have no barcode to scan. The guest taps to take a picture and the item is identified from the photo.
Both are guest-initiated actions. The guest decides what goes in the basket and tells the till about it, item by item, which is what keeps the basket honest and the guest in control.
Loose goods picked by weight or by the cup — a flower cup, a quart of berries — can carry a paid sticker applied at the point of sale, so anyone can see at a glance on the way out that the item has been rung up.

The point is that most of this is equipment a farm either already owns or can buy off a shelf and replace off a shelf. There is no single vendor-locked box whose failure on a Saturday closes the stand.

The same app is a counter till when a person is running it, a self-checkout kiosk when a guest is, and an entry-pass station at the gate. That is a practical point rather than a marketing one: a tablet that is a gate scanner from nine until eleven can be a shop kiosk for the rest of the day, and you are not buying three devices to cover three jobs.
