A slotted cash box worked when everyone carried a few singles. Today a good share of the people who slow down at your stand have a phone and a card and nothing in their wallet — so they take the tomatoes and mean to "come back with cash," and that sale is gone.
The usual fix is to tape a Venmo or Cash App QR code next to the box. It helps, but it quietly creates new problems. This guide is about the difference between a payment link taped to a box and an actual self-serve checkout — and how to turn a phone or tablet you already own into one.
Why a taped-on QR code isn't really a checkout
A personal Venmo or Cash App QR gets money moving, and for a one-price stand it's better than nothing. But look closely at what it doesn't do:
- No itemization. The customer decides what to type in. Three squash and a jar of honey becomes "$6" because that's what they remembered. You have no idea what actually left the table.
- No receipt, no record. At tax time you're scrolling a personal payments feed trying to separate farm income from splitting a pizza. Nothing ties a payment to what was sold.
- Easy to skip or fake. A number the customer types is a number the customer can shrink. "Payment sent" screenshots are trivial to fake, and you're not there to check.
- It's a personal account. Mixing farm revenue into a personal Venmo is a bookkeeping mess and, past a certain volume, a policy problem.
A QR code moves money. A checkout rings up the sale — it knows what was bought, charges the right amount, takes a card or a tap or a QR, sends a receipt, and records the transaction so your books match your bank. That's the upgrade.
Are you actually unattended? Probably not — and that's good news
Card-present payments — tapping a card or phone against your tablet, or using a Stripe reader — come with an attendance rule, and it's worth knowing which side of it you're on. Stripe sorts every setup into three buckets:
- Attended — "staff support is available, either per device or per location."
- Semi-attended — "a customer independently interacts with the card reader, but staff may be available in the store or nearby if needed." Stripe's own example is "a self-service kiosk with roaming employees nearby at the location, but not one per kiosk."
- Unattended — "no staff is on location to help the customer if needed."
Stripe's readers and Tap to Pay support attended and semi-attended, but not unattended.
The key insight for farm stands: the test is whether someone is on the property, not whether they're watching the screen. If the stand is at the end of your driveway and you're in the greenhouse or the kitchen, you're on location — that's semi-attended, and tap-to-pay on the tablet is available to you. Most stand operators assume they've disqualified themselves when they haven't.
Two caveats worth being honest about: your category is time-bounded (semi-attended at 3pm, genuinely unattended at dawn or on the day you're at market), and presence only counts when it's discoverable — a sign with a number, a doorbell, or a call button is what makes "someone's around" real rather than theoretical.

And if the stand really is empty, you still take cards. Unattended doesn't mean cash-only — it just means card-present capture is off. The customer scans the QR on screen, a Stripe-hosted checkout opens on their own phone, and they pay by card there. That's an ordinary online payment with no attendance restriction: Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay and Google Pay all still work. Cash and checks are unaffected.
What a self-serve checkout looks like at the stand
The idea: the tablet does the job you'd do if you were standing there. The customer drives it, one item at a time, and pays — no app to download, no account to make.
Two things make this practical for produce, where most items have no barcode:
- Snap-a-photo recognition. For the tomatoes, the zucchini, the cut flowers — the customer taps to take a photo and AI identifies the item against your catalog. It only ever looks when someone asks it to; nothing is watching the table or ringing items up passively.
- Browse the catalog. If a photo isn't a clean match, the customer picks the item from your list. Between scan, snap, and browse, there's always a way to add something to the cart.
What you actually need
You don't need a special terminal or a contract. A realistic self-serve setup is short:
- A phone or tablet you already own, mounted where it's protected from sun and weather.
- A weatherproof case and a lock or tether so the device stays put.
- Clear, round pricing on a sign — it speeds up checkout and cuts confusion.
- A way for a customer to reach you, if you're on the property. A number on a sign or a doorbell is what makes the semi-attended case real — and it's what keeps tap-to-pay on the tablet available.
- Cell data or Wi-Fi. Rural stands usually run fine on a cheap cellular plan; barcode scanning happens on the device itself, so a weak signal doesn't stop an item from ringing up.
- A locked cash box, optionally. Keeping cash and digital is the point — you're removing the "I don't have cash" walk-off without punishing the people who still bring singles.
Keep cash — just stop losing the cashless
The honor-system cash box isn't the enemy; the cash-only stand is. The customers you're losing today are the ones who stopped carrying bills. Offering a real checkout alongside the box means:
- The cash lovers drop bills in the slot like always.
- Everyone else pays by card — tapping the tablet, or scanning to their own phone — and actually pays for what they took.
- You get an itemized record either way for the digital sales, so you know what's selling and when — the kind of thing a jar of coins can never tell you.
Your books stop being a shoebox
This is the quiet win. Because each digital sale is a real transaction — item, price, time, payment — you get a clean sales record instead of a pile of screenshots. You can see that Saturday mornings move flowers and Wednesday evenings move tomatoes, and price accordingly. Come tax season the numbers are already sorted, not reconstructed from a personal payments feed.
Beyond produce: u-pick and events
If your stand also runs a pumpkin patch weekend, a u-pick session, or a small festival, the same tablet can handle admission. General-admission tickets are sold as ordinary catalog items, and — when you switch the feature on — security wristbands print from the stand's thermal receipt printer, with a signed QR that any till can validate even with no internet at the gate. It's there when you need it and off when you don't, so a plain produce stand stays plain.
When the signal drops
Rural is rural. Barcode scanning runs on the device itself, so items keep ringing up, and transactions sync once you're back on signal. QR payment keeps working as long as the customer's phone has a bar or two, since the checkout opens on their side. The one thing worth knowing: offline store-and-forward card acceptance requires a Bluetooth reader, and that's card-present — so it needs someone on the property. With no signal and nobody home, the cash box is the fallback.
