How to Setup an Affordable Self-Checkout Kiosk at an Unattended Farm Stand

Most roadside stands start the same way: a table, a chalkboard price list, and a coffee can with a slot cut in the lid. The honor system is beautifully simple, and for a great many stands it works well enough that nobody thinks hard about it.

It has two costs, though, and only one of them is the one people worry about.

The first is the leak — a dollar short here, exact change rounded down there, a kid grabbing an apple, a rushed commuter who "will come back Friday." You will find very confident percentages for this online. We don't quote them, because when you chase them they mostly cite each other rather than any study. The second cost is easier to miss: the customer who pulls up, reaches for a wallet, finds no cash, and drives off. That isn't shrinkage — it's a sale you never had, and you never find out it happened.

This guide is about closing that second gap without hiring a cashier, and about what the card rules actually allow at a stand nobody is standing at.

Should you change anything at all?

Plenty of stands shouldn't. If you're selling twenty dollars on a sleepy backroad, the simplicity of the can is worth more than anything a screen adds, and the leak is small in absolute terms even when it's large as a percentage.

What tips the calculation is volume and traffic, not principle. Three signals worth taking seriously:

  • You've started noticing the shortfall. Not measuring it — noticing it. The day the count comes in meaningfully under what you know went out the door is the day the honor box stopped being free.
  • People ask whether you take cards. Assume the ones who asked aren't the only ones who wanted to.
  • Your prices went up. A leak on cheap tomatoes and a leak on twenty-dollar bouquets are different problems, and the second one gets your attention faster.

If you want an actual number, the only one worth having is your own. Count what goes out and count what comes in for a couple of weeks. That will tell you more about your stand than any survey will.

First, work out whether your stand is really "unattended"

Before picking hardware, it's worth knowing which bucket you're in — because Stripe, whose readers and Tap to Pay this article assumes you'd use, defines these terms more narrowly than most operators expect. Quoted from its support documentation:

  • Attended — "Attended means staff support is available, either per device or per location."
  • Semi-attended, which Stripe folds inside attended — "This includes semi-attended scenarios, where a customer independently interacts with the card reader, but staff may be available in the store or nearby if needed." Stripe's stated example is "a self-service kiosk with roaming employees nearby at the location, but not one per kiosk."
  • Unattended — "no staff is on location to help the customer if needed."

And: "Stripe Terminal's pre-certified card readers and Tap to Pay support attended and semi-attended retail environments but don't support unattended."

Here's the part that matters, and it's good news for most stands: support has to be available, not stationed at the tablet. If your stand is at the end of your own driveway and you're in the barn, the packing shed, or the back field, someone is on location and reachable. That's the semi-attended case, and readers and Tap to Pay are available to you. A lot of stands that describe themselves as "unattended" are actually in this bucket.

Two things to keep in mind:

  • Your category moves with the clock. The same stand can be semi-attended at two in the afternoon and unattended at 6am, or on the Saturday you're at the farmers market across the county.
  • Presence only counts if it's discoverable. A customer who has no way to tell anyone's around is, functionally, alone. A sign with a phone number, a doorbell, or a call button is what turns theoretical presence into real availability.

None of this touches Square or any other processor — their rules are their own, and if you're using a Square reader you should read Square's terms rather than assuming Stripe's apply.

When nobody's home, cards still work

Here's the part that surprises people: unattended does not mean cash-only.

What's restricted with nobody on site is card-present capture — tapping a card against your tablet, and Stripe's own readers. The card itself is fine. The customer scans a QR code on the screen, which opens a Stripe-hosted checkout on their own phone. That's an ordinary online card payment. Stripe's attendance categories are documented for Terminal card-present acceptance and don't appear in its guidance on hosted online checkout, which is why this is the route operators use for unstaffed hours. Which cards and wallets appear depends on what you've enabled and what your connected Stripe account supports, so check your own configuration rather than assuming everything is on. Cash and checks are unaffected either way.

Attendance and signal are two different problems, and mixing them up is the most expensive mistake on this page. Attendance decides which card route you're allowed to use. Signal decides whether that route works at all.

  • QR is not an offline route. The customer pays on their own phone, but your tablet has to reach the internet to create that checkout page and confirm the payment landed.
  • Offline store-and-forward is narrow. It needs an external Bluetooth or USB reader — Tap to Pay has no offline mode whatsoever. It has to be switched on for your account ahead of time with a risk acknowledgement, the reader must have connected online at that location beforehand, it's capped by default at roughly $50 per sale and $500 held unforwarded, and you carry the loss if a card later declines. Treat it as a bridge across a short outage, not a plan.

Which means: if your stand has no signal, cards are difficult regardless of who's home. With someone present and a pre-provisioned Bluetooth or USB reader you can bridge a short outage within those caps. Without that setup, no signal means cash and checks. Check your service at the stand, not at the house, before you buy anything.

Your real options for taking cards unattended

Three practical ways to accept non-cash payments at a stand nobody is standing at. They're not mutually exclusive.

  • A static QR code to a payment app. Cheapest to set up: print a code and tape it to the table. The catches are trust and reconciliation — customers self-report the amount, there's no running total, no receipt, and matching payments to what sold is manual. Also check the terms: personal peer-to-peer accounts generally aren't permitted for business sales, so this needs a business account on whichever app you use. Fine as a backup, weak as your main method.
  • A tap-to-pay card reader. A reader tied to a phone or tablet accepts real cards and wallets — subject to the attendance rules above. But a bare reader has no prices and no product list, so unattended it only works if everything is one price or you trust people to key in the amount. It also needs power and somewhere sheltered to sit.
  • A self-checkout on a phone or tablet. This is what makes unattended card payment actually work: the screen shows your catalog and prices, the customer picks what they're buying, sees a real total with tax, and pays. It's the difference between "here's a way to send me money" and "here's a checkout."

That third option used to mean an expensive dedicated kiosk. It doesn't anymore — an Android tablet or phone you already own can run it.

How a tablet self-checkout works at a stand

The mechanics matter, because it has to be simple enough for a stranger with no instructions. Here's the flow at a stand running TallyTill:

A few things worth being precise about, because this space is full of overclaiming:

  • The camera does not passively watch the table and ring things up on its own. The customer scans a barcode, snaps a photo for the AI to match, or taps the item from your catalog. It's always a deliberate action — no mystery charges.
  • Barcode scanning is local and works with no signal. Photo recognition needs a connection, because identification runs on a server. So do emailed and texted receipts.
  • You keep your prices and your catalog. Tax, if you charge it, is handled for you.
  • It logs every sale, which is the input you need to decide what to plant and stock next season.
  • It runs on Android and in Chrome. There's no iOS build, so an old iPad won't run the app. Note that tap-to-pay on the device itself needs the Android app and an NFC-capable tablet — on the browser path you'd use a separate reader.

Does it pay for itself?

That depends on your traffic, and we'd rather you worked it out than took our word for it.

What you're recovering is whatever part of the leak a real checkout closes, plus the cash-only customers who used to drive off. The second is the one you can actually estimate: think about how often someone asks whether you take cards.

The honest summary: a stand selling twenty dollars on a sleepy backroad should keep the coffee can. A busy stand turning over real money most days is the case where staying cash-only starts costing more than the alternative.

Practical setup notes for a roadside stand

  • Power. A battery bank will carry a tablet through a market day, though a camera preview and a bright screen drain faster than you'd guess — size it generously and test it before you rely on it. Solar helps for a permanent stand, but size the panel to what you actually measure.
  • Shelter. Keep the screen covered and out of direct sun. Most stands just bring the tablet in overnight.
  • Signal. Check it at the stand, not the house. Cards need a connection at the tablet — both tap and QR. If service is marginal, a cellular tablet or an access point at the stand is worth more than anything else on this list.
  • Theft of the device. A locking mount or tether, and treat the tablet as something worth stealing — it is. What it doesn't do is hold cash, which is the main thing you're getting away from.
  • Make your presence findable. A small sign — "Ring the bell, we're in the barn" — is what makes the semi-attended case real rather than theoretical.
  • Keep cash too. You're adding a lane, not removing one.
  • Sign it clearly. "Tap to check out here" does most of the work. People know self-checkout; they just need to know it's there.

The takeaway

The honor system isn't the enemy — it's a good default that quietly starts costing you as you grow. You don't fix that by standing at the table all day. You fix it by giving customers a dead-simple way to pay for exactly what they took, by card, on hardware you already own — on your tablet when someone's around, on their own phone when nobody is.
