Camp Store Self-Checkout for Campgrounds and RV Parks

A guest pulls in at 9:14pm after six hours on the interstate. The office closed at six. They want a bundle of firewood, a bag of ice, and something to keep the mosquitoes off. Right now their options are an honor box with a rusted padlock, a note that says see us in the morning, or you walking down from your own trailer in slippers.

That gap between when guests want to buy and when someone is behind the counter is where most camp store revenue quietly goes missing. This page is about closing it with a tablet you already own — and about being straight with you on the parts campgrounds genuinely struggle with, starting with who's on the property and with connectivity.

What a guest actually does

TallyTill turns an Android tablet or phone into a self-checkout station. The guest drives every step. There is no camera watching the shelf, and nothing is added to a cart until the guest asks for it.

Every step is initiated by the guest. Nothing is detected passively — the camera is used only when the guest scans or taps to take a photo.

Three ways in — scan, snap, or tap — matters more at a camp store than almost anywhere else, because your inventory is split down the middle. Ice, propane exchange, batteries, chips and soda carry manufacturer barcodes. Firewood bundles, split kindling, bagged kiln-dried scrap and anything you package yourself do not. Who's on the property decides how a card gets taken

This is the rule that shapes everything else on this page, so it's worth getting right before the mounting brackets and the Wi-Fi.

Stripe sorts a checkout by one question: is there a person on site who could help a customer who gets stuck? Not whether anyone is watching the tablet — whether anyone is there. Which means the same shelf changes category at six o'clock.

  • Staffed hours — office open, or a host at the front site, or anyone on the property who could walk over. Stripe calls this semi-attended: the guest works the tablet themselves, but help exists nearby. Tap to Pay on the tablet and Stripe card readers are both fine here.
  • Unstaffed hours — office closed, nobody on the property at all. That's unattended, and Stripe's card readers and Tap to Pay are not certified for it.

Here is the part that trips people up, so let's kill the misconception directly: unattended does not mean you stop taking cards. It means you stop capturing them card-present on your own hardware. TallyTill shows a QR code instead. The guest scans it with their own phone and pays on a Stripe-hosted checkout page — which is an ordinary online card payment, with no attendance restriction attached to it at all. Cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, the lot. Cash and check are unaffected and work unattended too.

Campgrounds get an honest break here that most retailers don't. A great many properties have an owner, a manager, or a camp host living on site. If someone is on the property and reachable — even in a trailer two loops over, as long as a guest could raise them — that is semi-attended, and readers are fine around the clock. It's the property with nobody staying on it that needs the QR path once the office closes.

One thing to be plain about: this is a judgment you make about your own property and your own hours. There is no per-device or scheduled attendance setting in TallyTill to flip — you decide which payment methods you offer and when.

The signal problem, answered properly

Plenty of campgrounds sit in a hole, and this is the question that should decide what you buy. Here is the honest breakdown.

Card via QR on the guest's phone Doesn't work without a connection — but it's the guest's phone that needs one, not your tablet. Cell coverage is often fine where your Wi-Fi isn't.

Card payments offline are real, and they are the reason a campground should think hard about hardware. A Bluetooth Stripe reader can capture a card and hold it, forwarding the authorization once connectivity returns. The conditions are specific: you enable offline card payments in the portal and acknowledge the risk, you set a per-sale cap and a stored-total cap, and the reader must have already completed a successful online sale at that location before offline mode will engage. Chip and contactless work; swiped magnetic stripe does not.

The risk is yours, and it's worth stating plainly: an offline card payment hasn't been approved yet. If it declines after the guest has driven off with the firewood, you eat it. That is the trade, and it can't be designed away — we walk through the whole thing in Taking card payments when the internet goes down.

There's a boundary on it that matters here, and it's easy to miss: store-and-forward runs on a Bluetooth reader, which makes it a card-present payment, which puts it under exactly the same attendance rule as everything else card-present. Offline mode is a fix for a bad signal while someone is on site. It is not a fix for nobody being on site.

So, practically: if your bathhouse sits in a dead zone and the office is open — or a host lives on the property — the answer isn't to give up and move the station up to the office. It's a Bluetooth reader with offline mode enabled and caps set to a number you'd shrug at. Extending Wi-Fi to the bathhouse is still worth doing; it just isn't the only option, and it isn't a prerequisite for taking a card there.

What a reader can't solve is the overnight window on a property where nobody stays. Dead zone plus nobody on site is the genuinely hard case, and the honest answer is: cash and check still work, honor mode still works, and the QR path works whenever the guest's own phone has a signal — which on a cellular network it frequently does, even where your access point gave up fifty yards back.

The firewood honor box, upgraded

The classic campground honor box is a slot in a plywood box and a laminated price list. It leaks in three directions at once: guests who carry no cash simply don't buy, some who do carry cash underpay or skip, and you end up with no record of what actually sold — so you don't know whether you're out of firewood until someone complains.

Honor mode is built for exactly this. The guest rings the sale up on the tablet, and instead of a change-due calculator the screen shows a short envelope code. They write it on the envelope, drop the cash in the box, and walk off. You get a recorded sale, tied to a code, that you can match against the envelopes when you empty the box. Same drop box, same trust-based arrangement — but now it's a line item in your reports instead of a guess.

And guests who don't carry cash still get to pay by card at the same station — after hours, by scanning the QR code and paying on their phone. That alone tends to settle the argument: an honor box only sells to people with bills in their pocket, and fewer campers carry them every season.

Mounting a tablet at a campground

A consumer Android tablet is not a weatherproof device, and the specific ways they die at a campground are not the ways they die indoors:

  • Condensation, not just rain. An unheated bathhouse in shoulder season swings thirty degrees between 3am and noon, and the inside of a sealed enclosure sweats. Vented enclosures and a spot that isn't against an exterior wall both help more than another gasket.
  • The wash-down. Bathhouse floors get pressure-washed and hosed. Mount above splash height and route the charge cable so water runs away from the connector, not into it.
  • Insects. A lit screen at night in a wooded campground is an insect trap. Gnats get inside enclosures through cable ports and die on the glass. Seal the port, and expect to wipe the screen more often than you'd think.
  • Gravel dust and mower debris. Anything within throwing distance of a gravel loop road or a string trimmer gets sandblasted over a season. Set it back, or put a lip on the enclosure.
  • The closed season. If you shut down for winter, bring the tablet inside. A lithium battery left in an unheated bathhouse through a hard freeze often doesn't come back.
  • Powered permanently. Run the charge cable and don't plan on battery swaps in a month when nobody is on site.

Seasonal staff, and the shoulder season

Campground staffing is famously seasonal, and the register is usually the thing new hires get wrong. Self-checkout sidesteps most of the training: guests ring themselves up, and your staff's job shrinks to restocking the shelf.

The decisions that need judgment — discounts, refunds, voids — sit behind a manager PIN with an audit trail, so a returning host in May can be trusted with the shelf without being trusted with the till. Prices and the catalog live in the web portal, so a firewood price change reaches every device without anyone walking the property with new shelf tags.

Worth noting that your staffing calendar and your payment options move together. A property that's staffed dawn-to-dusk in July and has nobody on site in October is semi-attended in one season and unattended in the other, at the same shelf, with the same tablet. Decide what you're offering per season rather than setting it once in spring and forgetting.

Cart photos at checkout are worth a deliberate decision rather than a default. They're genuinely useful when a guest disputes a charge three states later — but they also mean photographing people on vacation at your bathhouse shelf. It's a setting; choose it on purpose.

If your season winds down to a skeleton crew, the store doesn't have to wind down with it.

One portal, several shelves

Most properties end up with more than one selling point: the main store at the office, ice and firewood at the bathhouse, maybe a stand near the boat ramp. Per-device settings are what make this useful. Cash and check are switchable per device, so the office station can take cards and cash with change tracking while the bathhouse shelf runs honor mode only, and the ramp stand carries a five-item catalog instead of the full one. Sales come back per device — so when you're deciding whether the bathhouse shelf is worth restocking twice a week, you're looking at that shelf's numbers, not the property's total. Tax is applied by jurisdiction, which matters if you run properties across more than one county line.

A note on what it doesn't do

Worth stating plainly, because the category is full of overpromising: TallyTill's camera does not watch your shelf, does not recognize items as guests pick them up, and does not ring anything up on its own. A guest scans a barcode, taps a tile, or takes a photo. If someone walks off with a bundle of firewood without touching the tablet, this is a camera pointed at a screen, not a loss-prevention system. What it replaces is the honor box and the closed sign.

Getting started

You need an Android tablet or phone, somewhere sheltered to mount it, and power. There's no proprietary hardware to buy, and no card terminal is required — during staffed hours Tap to Pay runs on the tablet itself, and once the office closes on an empty property the QR code sends the guest to a checkout page on their own phone. The one place that calculus changes is a weak-signal shelf during hours when someone is on the property: there, a Bluetooth reader isn't a nice-to-have, it's the thing that lets you take a card at all.

There's also a voice assistant built in. It's off until you switch it on in settings — with it enabled, guests can ask questions out loud at the kiosk, which is handy at 9pm when there's nobody else to ask.
