The busiest ten minutes at a ship's store are often the ten minutes nobody is there for. Boats push off before sunrise, and the crew wants ice, bait, coffee, and a tube of sunscreen on the walk down the dock. They come back after the last posted hour, sunburned and tired, and they want a cold drink and another bag of ice for the ride home. In between — the stretch of the day the store is actually open — the docks are empty.
That mismatch is why so many dock shops end up with a coffee can, a clipboard, or a sign that says see the dockmaster. All three leak money. None of them give the boater a receipt, and none of them tell you on Monday how much ice you actually moved.
Self-checkout closes the gap without adding a shift. TallyTill turns an Android tablet or phone you already own into the till: the customer rings themselves up, pays, and walks away with a receipt, whether or not anyone is behind the counter.
What the customer actually does
Every scan and every photo is customer-initiated. Nothing is detected passively — the shopper drives each step, the same way they would at a grocery self-checkout lane.
The three add methods matter more here than in most shops, because a dock shelf is a mix of two very different kinds of stock.
Packaged goods scan cleanly. Drinks, sunscreen, snacks, gloves, sunglasses, spooled line, leader, hooks in blister packs — they all carry a barcode, and barcode scanning is fast and local to the device.
The rest doesn't. A bag of ice is frosted over. A block of squid has a wet, peeling label. A hank of dock line you cut to length has no label at all. For those, the shopper either taps to snap a photo and lets AI identify the item against your catalog, or — usually simpler — just taps its picture on the checkout grid. What it doesn't do
Worth saying plainly, because computer-vision checkout is being pitched hard right now: the camera does not watch your counter. It does not sit there recognizing things as a customer lifts them off a shelf, and nothing lands in the cart by itself. Every single add is a deliberate action by the shopper — a scan, a tap to photograph, or a tap on a tile.
That is a real constraint. It is also why this runs on a tablet from an electronics store instead of a ceiling grid of sensors, which is the difference between a dock shop trying it this season and a dock shop reading about it.
Whether anyone is on site changes how cards get taken
This is the single most important thing to get right about a dawn-and-dusk operation, and it's the thing most write-ups gloss over.
Stripe classifies a checkout by one question: is there a person on site who could help a customer who gets stuck? Not whether anyone is watching the tablet — whether anyone is there. A ship's store therefore sits in two different categories at two different times of day, with the same tablet on the same counter.
- Store open, or a dockmaster or fuel attendant around. Stripe calls this semi-attended: the customer works the tablet themselves, but help is on the property. Tap to Pay on the tablet and Stripe card readers are both fine.
- 5:40 a.m., or after the last posted hour, with the docks empty and nobody on the property. That's unattended. Stripe's card readers and Tap to Pay are not certified for it.
Now the misconception worth killing outright: unattended does not mean you stop taking cards. It means you stop capturing them card-present on your own hardware. That is an ordinary online card payment and carries no attendance restriction at all — cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, all of it. Cash and check are unaffected and work unattended too. The dawn crew still pays by card; they just pay on their phone rather than tapping your tablet.
Marinas get an honest break here that a lot of retailers don't. Plenty of properties have an owner, a manager, or a dockmaster living on site or aboard, and many have a fuel attendant on early. If someone is on the property and reachable, that's semi-attended, and readers are fine — which for some marinas covers nearly the whole day.

Be clear that this is your call about your own property and hours. There's no per-device or scheduled attendance setting in TallyTill to flip — you decide which payment methods you offer, and when.
Dawn departures and after-hours returns
Kiosk mode locks the tablet to checkout only, using Android's built-in screen pinning. A customer isn't going to wander off into the browser, the settings app, or the photo gallery. It's a meaningful lock rather than a vault — pinning is only as strong as the one-time hardening behind it, so set a device PIN and require that PIN to unpin. Getting back out is deliberate: five taps on the logo plus your admin PIN, a manager QR code, or a switch flipped in the web portal. Revoke the device remotely and it exits kiosk mode on its own.
Salt, sun, and mounting a tablet you can afford to replace
This is the part most kiosk write-ups skip, and it's the part that decides whether the thing survives a season on the water.
- Put it under cover, out of spray. Inside the door or under a deep eave beats an exposed post, every time. Wind-driven salt spray is the enemy, not rain.
- Use a sealed enclosure with a wipeable clear front. Salt film on a touchscreen makes it feel broken long before it is broken.
- Aim it away from a low sun. Sunrise and sunset are precisely when this device gets used, and a low sun straight into the glass makes any screen unreadable. Glare geometry beats screen brightness — point the face north, or shade it with the enclosure's own hood.
- Mind the heat. A dark enclosure in full afternoon sun cooks a tablet and shortens its battery life badly. Shade and a little airflow are worth more than an expensive case.
- Strain-relieve the charging cable and keep the connector out of the drip line. On a boat-adjacent install, the charge port is usually the first thing to corrode.
- Wipe it down with fresh water on a cloth — not a spray bottle — at the end of a hot, salty week.
The strategic point is that a consumer tablet is a consumable. If one dies in its second season, you buy another off the shelf and register it in a couple of minutes (the QR pairing flow is here). You are not filing an RMA on a proprietary terminal and going dark at the counter while a replacement ships.
Connectivity on the water, honestly
Marina wifi rarely reaches the end of a dock, and a metal-roofed fuel shack is close to a Faraday cage. Here is what actually keeps working when the signal gives out:

That third row is the one that matters at a fuel dock, and it comes with conditions. Offline card payments have to be switched on for your account; the sale has to run through a Bluetooth Stripe reader, not Tap to Pay; and that reader has to have taken at least one ordinary card sale while online at the location first. After that, payments captured offline forward automatically as soon as connectivity returns. You set a per-sale cap and a total cap, and you carry the risk on a card that declines after the fact. There's a boundary on it that's easy to miss, and it matters a lot for a dock: store-and-forward only runs on a Bluetooth reader, which makes it a card-present payment, which puts it under the same attendance rule as everything else card-present. Offline mode solves a bad signal while somebody is on site. It does not solve nobody being on site.
So the practical consequence for a marina is narrower than it first looks, but still real: if the fuel shack has a weak signal during the hours you have someone down there — an attendant on early, a dockmaster aboard — the answer is a Bluetooth reader at the shack, not necessarily a contractor. A repeater or a cable run is still worth doing, because you want photo recognition and receipts flowing. It just isn't the only option.
The case a reader can't rescue is the empty dock at 5:40 a.m. with no signal. There, cash and honor mode still work, the sale is still recorded locally and syncs later, and the QR path works whenever the customer's phone has its own coverage — which on a cellular network it usually does, even at the end of a dock your access point never reached.
Transient slip holders aren't on your account list
Half your dawn traffic may be people you have never seen and will never see again — a transient in for one night, a delivery crew, a charter that shifted docks because of weather. Self-checkout is neutral about that. A stranger uses exactly the same flow as your annual slip holder, with no account to set up, no house charge to reconcile, and no name to remember. They tap a phone or a card and go.
The emailed or texted receipt matters more than it sounds like it should: charter captains, delivery crews, and commercial guys expense ice and bait, and a real receipt is the difference between a sale and a request for one three weeks later.
Splitting the fuel dock from the main store
Register each tablet as its own device. The portal reports sales per device, so the fuel-dock shelf and the main store land on separate lines of the same report instead of one blurred number — which is what you need to answer whether the fuel-dock cooler is worth restocking twice a day.
Settings follow the device too. You might allow cash at the staffed main store and turn it off entirely at the fuel dock, run a different tile grid at each, and put only the fuel-dock unit in kiosk mode. Manager PIN, discounts, refunds, and the audit trail apply across both, tax is handled by jurisdiction, and the reconciliation view lets you square up what came in. If the fuel-dock unit is really a drinks-and-ice cooler with a till beside it, the setup is close to what's described in starting a self-serve fridge.
Worth thinking about which of your two selling points is staffed and which isn't, because that's usually what decides the hardware. The main store, open with someone at the counter, is the natural home for a reader. The fuel dock at dawn generally isn't.
Answering questions when nobody is at the counter

What it takes to get going
A tablet or phone you already own, a sensible mount, your catalog loaded in the portal, and a Stripe account for card payments. Cards work in both directions from there: Tap to Pay or a reader during the hours somebody's on site, and QR to the customer's own phone when the docks are empty. Add a Bluetooth reader if the fuel dock's signal is unreliable and you have someone down there during those hours. No proprietary hardware and no card terminal required.
