What this does for you
The phone or tablet you already own becomes your checkout counter. A customer scans what they're buying, or you snap a photo of anything without a barcode and TallyTill's AI checks it against your catalog. They pay, you're done.
- No register to buy. Any phone or tablet works.
- Works staffed or not. Stand behind it, or set it on a stand and walk away.
- Every way to pay, from tap-to-pay to a cash drop box.
- Nothing to install to see a receipt. Card, cash, check or QR — it's all one flow.
⚠️ Watch Out! The camera reads barcodes live and lets you snap a photo for AI to identify — it does not watch a counter by itself and ring things up as customers set them down. Someone always scans, snaps, or picks the item.
Part 1 — Get a device selling
Step 1: Connect a device
- In the Portal, click Devices.
- Click Register New Device.
- On the phone or tablet, open TallyTill and follow Scan QR Code. Point its camera at the code on your screen.
💡 Pro Tip: Once it's paired, the device stays paired. You only do this once per device.
Step 2: Make sure your products are ready
Your device sells whatever is in your catalog. See the Products manual for adding items, prices and photos (coming soon) — or if you're only selling CSA boxes or animal shares, those are covered in their own manuals.
Part 2 — Ring up a sale
Step 3: Add items to the cart
There are three ways, and a customer can mix all three in one visit:
- Scan a barcode. Point the camera at it — TallyTill reads it live and adds the item.
- No barcode? Snap a photo. Tap the camera button. AI checks the photo against your catalog and offers what it found.
- Search or browse the product list.
Step 4: Take payment
The payment screen shows only the ways you've turned on: Card, Cash, Check, or a QR code for Cash App, Venmo or PayPal on the customer's own phone.
- Card: insert, tap or type it, depending on what you've connected.
- Cash: type what the customer handed you under Cash given — TallyTill works out Change due.
- Check: TallyTill shows a short code to write on the memo line, so you can match it later.
- QR: the customer points their own phone's camera at the code and pays through Cash App, Venmo or PayPal — scanning from inside those apps won't open it, it has to be the phone's regular camera.
Step 5: Offer a receipt
After payment, TallyTill asks Want a receipt? Type a Name and an Email or mobile number, and it sends itself — nothing to print unless you've connected a receipt printer.
Part 3 — Selling unattended (honor mode)
Set a device on a stand, turn on Honor mode, and customers check themselves out with nobody there.
- In the Portal, go to Cash Payments.
- Turn on Honor mode — customers deposit cash in a drop box (no cashier required).
With Honor mode on, a paying-cash customer sees Write this code on your envelope instead of a change calculator — they drop their cash and the code in your box, and you match it up later. A short note thanks them for their honesty.
💡 Pro Tip: Want the screen locked to checkout so nobody can back out to the phone's home screen? Turn on Kiosk Mode for that device under Devices → (your device) → Settings. It also has options to keep the screen from sleeping and to open in fullscreen automatically.
⚠️ Watch Out! Kiosk mode locks down the screen, not your money — it doesn't change how sales or cash are handled. It's purely about keeping the till on the checkout screen.
Part 4 — See how you did
- Reports shows your sales, filterable by payment type — including Prepaid (CSA) if you also run share programs.
- Payments matches card and QR payments to sales automatically. Anything it can't match sits in one place, waiting for you.
- Cash Payments lists what's been marked collected from a drop box, so you can reconcile an honor stand.
Troubleshooting
The camera won't start. Check that your browser has permission to use the camera — most phones ask the first time and remember your answer.
A barcode won't scan. Make sure there's enough light and the barcode isn't creased or glared over. If it still won't scan, search for the item by name instead.
A photo didn't identify the item. AI checks it against your own catalog — if the item has never been photographed or isn't in your catalog yet, it won't find a match. Search for it instead, or add it to Products with a photo.
A card was declined. That's between the customer's bank and their card — try again, or offer another way to pay.
A device shows as offline in the Portal. It still works for sales; they sync in once it's back online. Check the device still has power and a signal.
A sale is missing from Reports. Give it a minute — sales from a device sync in as soon as it has a connection. If it's been longer than that, check the device didn't go offline mid-sale.
