TallyTill vs Phone Tap-to-Pay Apps: Which One Do You Actually Need?

There is a whole category of apps that turn a phone into a card terminal by sitting on top of Stripe. The best known include Payment for Stripe (PocketVendor, Inc.), Paid (Pale Blue Software Ltd), and Stripe's own Dashboard app. Merchants who find TallyTill often ask how we compare to them.

The honest answer is that mostly we don't. These products solve a different problem than we do, and a merchant who buys the wrong one either pays for capability they never touch or ends up with something that can't do the one thing they actually needed.

A tap-to-pay app replaces a card terminal. A person from your business holds the phone, enters an amount or taps a saved item, and the customer taps a card.

TallyTill replaces a cashier. The customer operates the device themselves, and the till is designed to keep working when you step away from it.

That is the entire comparison. Everything below is detail.

The one-sentence test

When the sale happens, is someone from your business standing there?

If the answer is "yes, always," a tap-to-pay app is very likely the simpler answer, and you should stop reading and go install one. If the answer is "sometimes no," or "I want it to be no," that gap is what TallyTill exists to fill.

Credit where it is due

These are mature, well-liked products, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Payment for Stripe's App Store listing, checked August 2026, showed a 4.8-star average across roughly 8,900 ratings and an actively maintained release — ratings move, so check the current listing rather than this sentence. The vendor's own marketing claims 230,000+ businesses across 170+ countries; that is a self-reported figure we have not independently verified. Paid, from Pale Blue Software Ltd, similarly claims 40,000+ businesses on its website, also self-reported. Stripe's Dashboard app is Stripe's own product, which means no third party sits in the middle at all.

All three let you connect a Stripe account and start taking cards quickly. Both third-party apps advertise support for Stripe Terminal Bluetooth readers, tips, emailed receipts, tax and team members. Check each vendor's current listing for platform availability and feature scope before you buy — those change, and we are not in a position to certify another company's roadmap.

For a driveway sale, a market table with a person behind it, a mobile groomer, a salon chair, a coach collecting a session fee, or a food truck window — these apps are genuinely excellent and simpler than what we do. Go use one.

Where the two shapes diverge

Is there a catalog the customer can browse?

Both third-party apps have an item library. Payment for Stripe's listing describes products and subscriptions; Paid's advertises product libraries for one-tap selection. These are real features — but they are built to save your staff taps. The library lives on the staff side of the counter.

Fairness requires naming one exception: Paid's App Store listing (August 2026) advertises a Self-Service Mode that lets clients check out using predefined amounts. So one of these apps does hand the device over. What the listing describes is predefined amounts rather than a photographed, searchable catalog with categories and a running cart.

On TallyTill the whole screen belongs to the customer: a grid of your products with photos, search, categories, a cart, a running total, and tax applied for your jurisdiction.

Goods with no barcode

This is where most of our merchants arrive — plants, produce, baked goods, and anything else that never had a barcode.

TallyTill gives the customer three ways in: scan a barcode or QR (this runs locally on the device and works with no signal), tap to snap a photo that our server-side AI matches against your catalog, offering the closest candidates to add (this one needs a connection), or simply browse and search the catalog.

One thing to be precise about, because it is often assumed: the camera does not watch the counter. It never passively recognizes items and never rings anything up on its own. Nothing happens until the customer scans or taps.

On a tap-to-pay app, unbarcoded goods are a non-issue for a different reason — your staff picks the item or types the amount. That works fine, right up until nobody is there to do it.

Locking the device down

If the customer is holding the device and you are not there, they can wander out of your app. TallyTill uses Android screen pinning to keep the checkout in the foreground, exposed as a kiosk setting.

Be clear-eyed about what that is: it is not tamper-proof. It is an admin-escapable lock — enough to stop drift and casual poking, not a hardened payment terminal. Worth knowing that both Android and iOS offer OS-level pinning and Guided Access that you can apply to any app yourself, so this is a matter of how much the software does for you rather than something only one product can achieve.

Who is standing there, in Stripe's terms

This applies to both products equally — it is Stripe's rule, not a difference between us — and it is worth understanding before you commit either way.

Stripe's support documentation says: "Attended means staff support is available, either per device or per location." It folds semi-attended inside that: "This includes semi-attended scenarios, where a customer independently interacts with the card reader, but staff may be available in the store or nearby if needed." And unattended is "no staff is on location to help the customer if needed."

Stripe's readers and Tap to Pay are supported for the first two only: "Stripe Terminal's pre-certified card readers and Tap to Pay support attended and semi-attended retail environments but don't support unattended." Its examples of unattended terminals are ATMs, vending machines, dispensing machines, toll booths and parking meters.

The practical consequence: most farm stands, fridges and market tables are semi-attended during opening hours — somebody is on the property, even if they are in the field or the back room — and readers work fine there. When nobody is on site, the card moves to a QR code the customer pays on their own phone, which is an ordinary online payment and is why it is the route operators use for unstaffed hours. Cash and check

TallyTill can optionally take cash and check — with change-due tracking when somebody is attending, or an honor-mode drop box that shows the customer an envelope code and lets you reconcile later. Cash and check always work with no signal. The tap-to-pay apps are built around card acceptance; if recording other tender types matters to you, check what each one currently supports. If you have been running a cash box, this is the piece to read.

Back office

TallyTill assumes you may end up with more than one device: fleet management across tills, a reconciliation queue, tax by jurisdiction, manager PIN for discounts, refunds and overrides with an audit trail, and cart photos attached to each session. Event admission — general-admission tickets sold as catalog products, wristbands printed from the till's thermal printer — is a settings-enabled feature; see the u-pick walkthrough for what it does and doesn't cover.

The tap-to-pay apps give you the Stripe dashboard plus their own reporting. For one phone in one hand, that is plenty.

Platform: a real disadvantage for us

Plainly: TallyTill has no iOS build. We run on Android and in Chrome. If you are an iPhone-and-iPad business, that is a genuine mark against us and there is no spin to put on it — check each competing app's current listing for its own platform support.

Offline behavior

We wrote a whole guide on offline card payments, so the short version: barcode scanning is local and works with no signal, and cash and check always work. Card sales can complete offline through Stripe store-and-forward, but narrowly — it needs an external Bluetooth or USB reader (Tap to Pay has no offline mode at all), must be switched on for your account in advance, requires that reader to have connected online at that location beforehand, is capped by default at roughly $50 per sale and $500 held unforwarded, and leaves you carrying the loss if a card later declines. Emailed receipts do not send while you are offline. AI photo recognition needs a connection too.

Nor is QR an offline route, which is the thing most people get wrong: the customer pays on their own phone, but your till has to reach the server to create that checkout session and to confirm the payment landed. QR solves the attendance problem, not the signal problem. Those are separate axes and it is worth keeping them apart when you plan a site.

Payment for Stripe's website also lists an offline mode; check with them directly for its current conditions.

Setup effort

A tap-to-pay app asks almost nothing of you: connect Stripe, charge.

TallyTill asks more, and we would rather say so than have you discover it on day one. Before a customer can serve themselves, you have to build the catalog — names, prices, photos, tax. For a real catalog that is a sitting-down job, not a two-minute one. That is the price of self-service: nobody can browse what you have not entered. Our setup checklist walks the sequence.

The shape of the money

We are not quoting anyone's rates here, including our own, because rates change and articles go stale silently. Check each vendor's own pricing page, Stripe's pricing page, and ours — and note that the shapes differ, so compare total cost against your own volume rather than comparing headline numbers.

On our side: a per-device plan, with a platform fee on card processing that runs through us. There is a free plan with no seat cost and no card required, and like every plan it carries a per-sale fee.

So which should you actually buy?

Buy a phone tap-to-pay app if:

  • Someone from your business is present at every sale, full stop.
  • You mostly need to take a card, not run a store.
  • You are on iPhone or iPad.
  • Your prices are simple enough to type, or your item list is short.
  • You want to be charging money today, with no catalog to build.

Buy TallyTill if:

  • You want to sell when nobody is standing at the counter — a fridge, a farm stand, a market booth after hours, a nursery aisle. With staff on the property a reader works; with nobody on site, card payment moves to a QR code on the customer's phone.
  • Customers need to browse and pick things themselves, with photos and prices on screen.
  • You sell goods with no barcode and need the customer to identify them without your help.
  • You want cash or check handled alongside cards, including an honor-mode drop box.
  • You will end up with more than one device, or need reconciliation, jurisdiction tax, manager overrides, and dispute evidence.
  • Android tablets are acceptable hardware.

And plenty of businesses should buy both. A tap-to-pay app on the phone in your pocket for the odd attended sale, and a TallyTill till on the stand for the hours you are not there. Those are different jobs. There is no rule that says one tool has to do both.

If you are still unsure, the test at the top is the only one that matters: when the sale happens, is someone from your business standing there? Answer that honestly and the choice makes itself.
