How does a stranger pay when there's no one standing there to run a card?
Almost every article you'll find on "tap to pay" quietly assumes you're behind the counter, holding the phone, tapping the customer's card for them. That's not your situation. At a self-serve stand, the customer does the paying — they walk up to a device you've left out, ring up their own items, and settle up themselves. That changes which payment method actually works.

First, why contactless at all
Because a cash-only stand now turns away the majority of walk-ups. Tapping a card or phone has quietly become the default way Americans pay in person — not a young-person novelty, but how most in-person card payments now happen.
Visa reported that contactless passed 60% of its US in-person ("face-to-face") payments in 2025, and Mastercard now describes tap-and-go as a settled habit rather than a trend. The practical takeaway for a small stand: a customer who wants to buy your jam usually expects to tap something, and if they can't, a good number of them simply won't have cash and will walk.
Tap-to-pay: the customer taps their own card or phone
Tap-to-pay uses the NFC chip already built into modern phones and tablets. On a self-serve stand it works like this: the checkout device sits on your counter facing the customer; they add their items, the screen shows a total, and they hold their contactless card, phone, or watch to the device for a second. Done.
What the device needs. This is the detail most guides skip, and it's the one that trips people up. Tap-to-pay only works if the device you leave out can actually read a contactless tap:
- On an iPhone: Apple's Tap to Pay on iPhone runs on an iPhone XS or newer with a current version of iOS — no dongle, no reader.
- On Android: you need an NFC-enabled device running Android 9 or later, per Stripe's Tap to Pay documentation. Here's the catch for tablets: most budget Android tablets have no NFC chip at all. If you're repurposing an old tablet for the stand, check first. Samsung's Galaxy Tab S line generally includes NFC; the cheap no-name tablet in a drawer usually doesn't.
What the customer needs. Almost nothing — a contactless-enabled card (nearly all are now) or a phone wallet like Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay. This is the fastest possible checkout: one tap, no app to open, no account to log into.
QR code: the customer pays on their own phone
A QR checkout flips the hardware requirement around. Instead of the stand needing an NFC chip, the customer scans a code shown on the screen and finishes the payment on their own phone — for example through a wallet like Venmo, Cash App, or PayPal, or a payment link. Neither device needs NFC.
That makes QR the great equalizer:
- It works on any smartphone with a camera — which today means essentially every customer.
- It works even if the tablet you're running the stand on is an older or budget model with no NFC — so you can accept digital payments on hardware that could never do tap-to-pay.
- There's no card reader to buy, lose in the rain, or watch break down at the worst moment.
The trade-offs are real, though. A QR payment is a few taps longer than a single tap. Some rails need the customer to already have that app or account. And depending on the method, you may confirm the money landed rather than having it swept automatically like a card charge.

Neither wins outright. Tap is faster and more familiar; QR reaches every phone and every device. Which is exactly why the choice isn't really "either/or."
The answer: offer both
The stands that lose the fewest sales don't pick a side. They put a device on the counter that lets the customer tap if they can, and scan if they can't — with cash as an optional extra if your location wants it.
Think of it as belt and suspenders. The shopper with a newer phone taps and is gone in two seconds. The one whose card is buried in a bag scans the QR. The one who only carries cash drops it in the box. You've closed the sale in all three cases instead of watching a third of your walk-ups leave empty-handed. When a single unattended stand has to serve everyone who happens to wander up, turning anyone away for lack of a payment option is the one mistake you can't afford.
