Search for "how to set up a self-checkout" and every result sells you the same thing: a card reader, a branded stand, a Bluetooth receipt printer, and a monthly plan to tie them together. It's a bundle, and the bundle assumes you're starting from nothing.
You're usually not. The most expensive parts of a checkout — a bright touchscreen and a decent camera — are already sitting in a kitchen drawer, in last year's phone, or on the tablet the kids stopped using. The screen is the register. The camera is the scanner. What you're actually missing is the software that turns them into a till and takes the money.
This guide is about doing exactly that: taking a device you already own and running a self-serve checkout on it — no card reader required, no hardware to buy. We'll cover which devices genuinely work, the three or four specs that matter, how to lock the thing down so a customer can't wander into your email, and — honestly — where a hand-me-down device falls short.
Why the screen is the part you already paid for
A traditional POS terminal is a computer with a screen, a card slot, and a printer welded together, sold at a hardware markup. Split it apart and you find that the touchscreen is most of the cost and most of the value. A phone from three years ago has a better screen and a faster processor than the register at most corner stores.
So the cheapest path to a working checkout isn't buying a smaller terminal. It's skipping the terminal. You point a checkout app at the screen and camera you already own, and you pay for card processing only when you actually make a sale.
What a reused device actually becomes
Here's the whole flow, from a device gathering dust to a stand that takes money while you're not standing there.
Nothing in that list is a purchase except, optionally, a $15 tablet stand. The device, the camera, and the checkout are things you either already have or can start for free.
The specs that actually matter (and the ones that don't)
You don't need a flagship. You need four things to be good enough:
- A rear camera that focuses. This is the one spec people get wrong. The camera reads barcodes and takes the product photo the AI identifies. A cracked lens or a camera that won't focus close-up is the only true dealbreaker. Almost any phone or tablet from the last five years is fine; a $40 yard-sale tablet with a mushy fixed-focus camera is not.
- A screen you can read in your light. A farm stand in full sun needs more brightness than a hallway fridge. If the old device's screen is dim, put it somewhere shaded or under a canopy rather than buying a new one.
- A way to stay powered. A checkout that dies at 2 p.m. isn't a checkout. If the device sits in one spot, run a charging cable to it and stop thinking about the battery. Battery only matters for a roving market booth, and even then a $12 power bank solves it.
- A modern browser, or Android. This is the part that decides which path you're on — so it gets its own section.
Things that do not matter: storage size, having the latest OS, a big-brand logo, or a fast cellular plan. A self-checkout is a light app. It is not a gaming rig.
Android, iPad, or an old laptop: pick your path honestly
The device you have decides how you run it. All three paths work; they're just not identical, and it's worth being straight about the differences.
An Android tablet or phone is the sweet spot. You can install the checkout as a real app from the Play Store, and Android lets you pin the app to a single screen — a shopper taps around all they like and can't get to settings, the browser, or your photos. It also handles live barcode scanning the most smoothly. If you're buying a cheap device specifically to be a dedicated till, buy a basic Android tablet.
An iPad, an old laptop, or a Windows machine runs the checkout in the browser. Open the web till in Chrome, Safari, or Edge and you have a full register — catalog, cart, tap-to-pay, QR payment, AI photo recognition, receipts. This is the fastest way to test the whole thing in five minutes on whatever is closest. The one honest caveat: live 1D barcode scanning is smoothest on Android and Chrome. On an iPad, QR codes and the snap-a-photo AI path work anywhere, but if your inventory is mostly barcoded packaged goods, an Android device will feel better at the scanner.
An old phone is a perfectly good second lane. The screen is small for browsing a big catalog, but for a fridge, an honor-box replacement, or a "scan this one thing and pay" stand, a phone zip-tied to a shelf is a complete checkout for $0 in hardware.
One thing no reused device does — and no camera checkout should claim to — is watch a counter and automatically ring up items as customers set them down. That's not how this works. A shopper scans a barcode, or snaps a photo and the AI identifies the item; the person is always the one who adds it to the cart. Any pitch that promises a camera silently tallying a table is selling you a demo, not a product.
How customers pay — without a card reader
This is where reusing your device saves the most money, because the card reader is the piece everyone assumes they need and most small sellers don't.
- Tap to pay works on the screen itself on supported devices — the customer holds their card or phone to the tablet, no dongle.
- QR payment shows a code on screen; the customer pays from their own phone. This needs zero payment hardware and works on the oldest device in the pile.
- Cash and check can be turned on per location for stands that still take them, with the sale recorded either way.
You connect your own payment account, the money lands in your bank, and there's a small per-sale platform fee — cash and check carry none. There's no reader to buy, charge, or lose. If you later want a physical card terminal for a busy staffed counter, you can add one; for a self-serve stand, tap and QR usually cover it.
Locking it down so it's a till, not a tablet
The fear with a customer-facing device is obvious: what stops someone from closing the checkout and poking around? Three things, in order of strength:
- Screen pinning (Android). Pin the checkout to one app and the device refuses to leave it. No home screen, no browser, no settings — the exit is gated behind your PIN. This is the real lockdown, and it's why a dedicated till is worth being an Android device.
- A hidden admin unlock. Day-to-day settings and reports live behind a PIN that a shopper never sees — reached by a deliberate secret tap, not a visible "Admin" button begging to be pressed.
- Physical mounting. A cheap locking stand or even a good adhesive mount keeps the device from walking off. For unattended stands, this matters as much as the software.
For a browser-based till on an iPad or laptop, you won't get true OS-level pinning, so put those where you can see them — a staffed counter, a booth you're standing in — rather than fully unattended overnight.
Where a hand-me-down device honestly falls short
Reusing a device is the right call for most small sellers. It is not magic, and here's where it isn't:
- Printed receipts still need a printer. If you want paper, that's a small thermal printer — the one piece of hardware a phone can't fake. Most self-serve sellers skip it and send a digital receipt instead.
- All-day battery on a roving booth is a stretch for a five-year-old device. Bring a power bank.
- A truly ancient device with no camera focus isn't worth fighting. If the camera can't read a code, buy a $60 Android tablet — still a fraction of a bundled terminal — and reuse the old one as a backup.
- Direct sunlight beats dim screens. A shaded spot fixes it; a new screen isn't the answer.
None of these require the bundle. They're the honest edges of doing more with less.
